Ella’s Hidden Blue Water Cave
If you are looking for something unique, daring, exhilarating, and are also prepared to get quite muddy, we could not recommend this experience highly enough. ‘Nil Diya Pokuna’ translating to Blue Water Pond, is an astonishing underground pond located 80 metres deep inside a mountain cave near Ella. The cave is believed to have been built by King Ravana and is said to consist of several other complex tunnels that were used to reach different locations. There is, however, no evidence to this as only a small part of the cave has been discovered.
The entrance to the cave, which bears similarities to a large rabbit hole, is in a forest reserve about 500 metres from the main road. Your guide, who is from a nearby village, will introduce himself at the entrance and provide you with powerful headlamps to use on your journey. Your descent into the cave begins with a series of ropes and ladders. The beauty about the cave is that it has been preserved the way it was found i.e. there are no lights, steps or bathrooms inside.
