The Wallawwa is conveniently located for the airport, yet there is so much to do in the local area that it is a destination in itself. Our local town of Negombo is home to a long, sandy, golden stretch of beach, and this Christian coastal settlement, its buzzing fish market and colonial churches, can be explored on foot with a local guide. The town’s lagoon extends into the Muthurajawela Wetlands, and this wildlife-rich expanse may be navigated on a guided boat tour.
Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo is a short drive away; the absorbing guided walks around the city’s rich colonial fort area and buzzy Pettah market district are great fun or you could tour the city’s emerging art galleries and religious buildings with an expert on a tour focusing on art and aesthetics. Further afield, make for the little-visited Buddhist Pilikuttuwa Rajamaha Temple, or take a day trip to walk with elephants and visit a small tea factory at Kegalle.
