The ‘Iron Devil’ translated into Sinhala as the Yakada Yaka is the term given to the Steam trains that have graced the mountains of Sri Lanka since the mid 1800’s transporting Tea and people between Colombo and the hill stations of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella.
In a town, not 5 km from the southern hill station of Ella, is a bridge called the Nine Skies, on which the Iron Devil travels 3 times a day. The viaduct was built between the two railway stations – Ella and Demodara during the British Colonial period and is the largest in Sri Lanka. Located almost 3100 feet above the sea level, this 99.6ft high bridge is called “Ahas namaye palama” (Nine skies bridge) in Sinhala.
Taking its name from this famed bride, Nine Skies, is situated just 1km above the station of Demodara. Our guests have the option of arriving at their private Tea Estate bungalow ‘Nine Skies’ on the Iron Devil, and can be collected from the station is a Tuk Tuk.
