Lying derelict and unused since the mid 1950’s the site that is now the Fort Bazaar was discovered by the Teardrop team back in 2006. The arduous task of obtaining all relevant permissions to build within the historic and UNESCO protected Galle Fort nearly broke our backs, but we got there eventually. The result is a labor of love that, with the help of PWA Architects in Colombo, has helped to restore the buildings original Dutch charm through a series of original arches that had been hidden by previous owners and is now the home to 18 delightful rooms including 3 upper suites that are the glory of Galle at over 85 sq m with free standing bath tubs and the only private balconies in the fort that over-look the bustling Church Street which lends its name to the hotel’s happening restaurant and bar, Church Street Social.

Over 65 laborers and three dogs lived on site for over 18 months, finally completing the renovation that adds a new contemporary feel to one of Asia’s top tourist destination.
